Kevin Harvick wins the NASCAR Nationwide Series race
at Nashville Superspeedway
LEBANON, Tenn. – A risky but calculated call with 35 laps to go sealed the win for Kevin Harvick at Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday afternoon. During a late-race caution, Harvick’s team opted for track position, instead of handling, which proved to be a smart move as he came out on top with the Sam Bass-designed Gibson Les Paul trophy guitar in hand at the end of 300-miles of NASCAR Nationwide Series action.
"I knew we had 25-30 laps to hold them off and (the car) got tighter than we would have wanted it to," said Harvick, who was competing at the track for the first time in four years. "But we had the track position and it worked out. It was definitely fun. It's a lot more fun when you win."
Harvick, driver and owner of the No. 33 Armour Chevrolet, celebrated his second career win at Nashville. He also won at the track in April 2006.
Reed Sorenson chased Harvick to the checkered flag but ran out of laps in the end. “Even when there was 10 laps to go, I thought we could get him (Harvick) and with five laps to go, I still thought we could,” said Sorenson, driver of the No. 32 Dollar General Toyota. “I could taste it, that was a feeling that I felt in this car a few times last year and the second time this year we’ve already felt it again. These guys do a great job and I can’t wait till next weekend.”
Kyle Busch, looking to capitalize on the momentum of winning the previous night in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Nashville, came home third. “It was a decent run for us,” said Busch, driver of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota. “Unfortunately, I just started so far behind the eight ball to begin with that we just had a hard time getting back to where we needed to be. The car was good there toward the end of the race and we were able to get a third place finish. Pleased with the effort, a little disappointed by the result, but we could have been a lot worse.”
Justin Allgaier and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top-five. Carl Edwards, who finished sixth, retained the points lead, 16 points ahead of Keselowski and 21 points ahead of Allgaier.
The NASCAR Nationwide Series comes back to Nashville Superspeedway June 4-5, 2010, followed by the return of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on August, 7, 2010. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call 1-866-RACE-TIX or visit NashvilleSuperspeedway.com.
